On TuneLand, our forum, we spend a great deal of time talking about sound reproduction from the point of view of how sound really works. A big part of this is has to do with what I call the audio trilogy. Here is a post that I put up on the topic, but you will find hundreds of references about the trilogy on TuneLand:

So much of the time we see the ads, but do we get a chance to really see the art of our hobby until we are sitting in front of our system wishing it were better or being blown away by it? Well, if you are in one of these two camps, let me tell you why. All of our systems abide by the same set of laws that they have to obey in order for the products to perform. One of those laws is the law of variable tuning.

Tuning or de-tuning is what happens to every part inside of every component as it begins to react to the world's natural conditions. Yes, the parts actually change in their performance. If you look at the specs on most parts, you will see a little disclaimer saying "plus or minus 3dB", which means that no two parts or components ever perform exactly the same. Does this mean that we should take our components back? Of course not; this simply means that there is another chapter, beyond the purchasing of a component, which exists for the person who wants to step beyond the "norm" in performance.

If you have been reading my articles, you might be waiting for my punch line. Here it is. The electronic signal that is inside of every component ever made is tunable just like a musical instrument. This statement may have just taken some of you off guard, so you might want to listen to this. Over the last fifteen years, we at Michael Green Audio have been taking apart all of your components and have been running listening and technical tests on all of your components. What we have found out is a simple truth that we now apply to the entire hobby.

Here's how it breaks down. All energy has an ingredient that appears in all forms of energy transfer or function. That ingredient is vibration. If fact, you could go as far to say that energy is vibration. Now, if you take this vibration and you put an audio or video signal with it, you are just one step away from the beginning of a whole new chapter of the understanding of your hobby. The trilogy (acoustical, mechanical, and electrical) is pure vibration. Now that you are picturing this in your mind, let me throw this out at you. When playing an instrument, how do you control vibration? That's right, by tuning it. Your audio signal (no matter what part of the trilogy it is in) is able to be altered or, as I prefer to put it, able to be tuned. Tuning your performance in is the biggest chapter for the extreme A/V enthusiast. Now that the world of ultra high tech components are making their way to your door steps and the price of these components versus their cost are coming way down, it is time for the hobbyists to re-evaluate their position on the products they purchase. Think about it. We live in the day of entertainment rooms, home theaters, and dedicated listening rooms. This is the ultimate "home toy", a room built like a musical instrument and a system in that room that is tunable.
