The HX-1 system from Vidan allows you to import drawings of your floor plans, place icons representing control items (ie lights etc.) on the drawings and display them on your TV. By using a OneForAll remote control you can then control the equipment and systems from the TV screen by selecting the icon and changing it's properties.

The unit comes packaged with the following items:
    - The HX-1 unit
    - (2) Modular (telephone type) cables
    - (1) Composite Video cable
    - Power Supply
    - Computer DB9 to Modular jack converter
    - Software (on one floppy disk)

The following items are not included with the HX-1, but are required for proper operation (sold separately):
    - TW523 X-10 power line interface module
    - X-10 modules
    - Any universal infrared remote control with "MUTE", "VOLUME+", "VOLUME-", "CHANNEL+" and "CHANNEL-" keys. (set the IR remote to any of the Sony control codes)

To install the system, connect either the composite video output or the S-Video output directly into the TV video input jack. (If your TV has no video input jack you will need an RF modulator). Connect the TW523 X-10 interface module to the X-10 jack using the modular cable provided. Plug in the Power supply and connect to HX-1.

Using any universal infrared remote control set to "Sony" control code, click the "VOLUME+" (move right), "VOLUME-" (move left), "CHANNEL+" (move up) and "CHANNEL-" (move down) keys in order to "move around" on the house map until the blinking cursor is on a device icon. Click "MUTE" in order to select a device and/or cause an action to occur. The device submenu will be displayed and you move around on this menu in the same way and click "MUTE" in order to cause an action to occur. Click "Schedule" on the device submenu to change the schedule for that device only (each device can have its own schedule). The schedule submenu is also used to set the correct time and date (move to the top of schedule to change current time/date).

The HX-1 PC Software is used to setup the HX-1 Home Control System. (i.e. Create custom house maps, add physical devices (objects), create macros, etc.) This software is also used to send firmware upgrades to the HX-1 unit.

To create a custom background, you can use any drawing program such as Microsoft Paint. Draw any 320 pixel wide by 212 pixel high bitmap and save it as a 256-color .BMP file. To use your newly created background bitmap, select "Change Background Bitmap…" from the "Floorplan" menu, and select the newly created .BMP file. The object tool palette is then used to add new objects to a floorplan. Simply click on one of the buttons and that object will appear in the upper left corner of the main window. You can then click and drag the object to a desired position.

There are 5 object types currently supported by the HX-1. They are Non-Active, X-10, Thermostat, Macro, and Floorplan Link. Some object types have sub-types as well.

Non-Active:
Non-Active objects are just graphical objects placed around a floorplan to make it look nice such as a couch or arm chair. These objects cannot be selected on the television, and do not control anything.

X-10:
X-10 objects are objects that represent an X-10 device (or module) in the real world. These objects have a description, an X-10 Address, and can have a schedule. There are 6 sub-types of X-10 objects.

Thermostat:
The HX-1 currently supports the TX15B Thermostat from RCS. The thermostat type will allow you to control one of these units. These objects have a description, an X-10 house code, and a schedule.

Macro:
A Macro consists of a list of actions to perform a list of conditions to check before "running" the macro, and a list of triggers that will tell the HX-1 to try to "run" the macro. Macros have two sub-types, "Run at Power On" and "Do Not Run at Power On". A macro has a description, a list of triggers, a list of conditions, a list of actions, and a schedule.

Floorplan Link:

A Floorplan Link is used to move to other Floorplans on the television display. A Floorplan link only needs to know the floorplan to go to when clicked on from the television screen.

Object properties are adjusted and programmed by clicking the right mouse button on the object who's properties you wish to view or edit.

Here you can use the various tabs to edit object properties. The tabs are as follows:

The Type tab.
Here you can edit the Object type, Object sub-type.Description, and X-10 address.

The Schedule tab
Add / Remove lines from the schedule.

The Triggers tab (only available for a macro type)
Add / Remove lines from the trigger list.

The Conditions tab (only available for a macro type)
Add / Remove lines from the condition list.

The Action tab (only available for a macro type)
Add / Remove lines from the action list.

The Floorplan Link tab (only available for a floorplan link type)
Select a floor plan to jump to.

Once you're done with programming you download to the HX-1 unit (via the serial cable) and from then on there is no need to have the computer on or connected.

Set-up and operation of the HX-1 is pretty straight forward and if you're a major couch potato you'll love controlling the system from your TV. Retail price is approximately $399.
